SUMMARY:Groundcover Restoration Academy
DESCRIPTION:This is a 2.5-day event:  \nTuesday October 17\, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM\nWednesday October 18\, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM\n&\nThursday October 19\, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM \n  \nGroundcover 201 will guide students through the principles and practices of restoring native plant species in longleaf pine systems.  Native groundcover provides numerous benefits in longleaf pine systems\, from wildlife habitat and food sources\, fuel for frequent prescribed fires\, host plants for pollinator species\, nutrient cycling\, and aesthetic benefits. But it can often be degraded\, or absent\, as a result of prior land use practices. \n  \nDuring the 2.5 day course\, students will gain the tools for planning and implementing their own groundcover projects through expert instruction from restoration practitioners and producers\, hands-on exercises\, equipment demonstrations\, and a field tour. \n  \nTopics covered include: \n– Longleaf Pine Communities\n– Determining Restoration Needs\n– Seed Source Selection\n– Plants for Longleaf Restoration\n– Seed Collection\n– Site Preparation\n– Planting Methods\n– Maintenance and Management \n  \nLodging  A block of rooms is set aside at the Moncks Corner Inn\, 505 Rembert C Dennis Blvd\, Moncks Corner\, SC 29461. \n  \nThese are offered at a discount for our group: \n  \nStandard 1 King Bed $119.00 plus 13% tax per night\nStandard 2 Queen Beds $129.00 plus 13% tax per night \n  \nThe rate includes a complimentary hot breakfast each morning and complimentary wifi.  Moncks Corner Inn is a 100% smoke free facility. \n  \n  \nReservations can be made by calling the Inn: 843-761-5900\nGroup name: “Longleaf Alliance”  \n  \nReservations must be made by September 30th to be part of the block. \n  \nThe Inn has two floors with no elevator.  If you need a first floor room\, please notify the Inn staff at the time of the reservation. \n  \nThis course is approved for 13 Category I SAF credits. \n  \n\nContact Karen Brown with questions at karen@longleafalliance.org.
