SUMMARY:Fire & Longleaf 301: Advancing Fire Management Goals in Longleaf Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:This is a 3-day event:  \nWednesday May 1\, 2024    8:30 am— 5:00 pm\nThursday May 2\, 2024    8:30 am—5:00 pm\nFriday May 3\, 2024    8:30 am —3:00 pm* \n*All day prescribed burn \n  \n  \nThis 3-day course is designed for experienced fire practitioners who are ready to take their prescribed fire practice “beyond the black”. \n  \nThe course will address the fire science behind achieving desired fire effects under various burn conditions and seasons.  Guest speakers will share lessons learned from fire management programs that are addressing specific resource concerns\, challenging restoration objectives\, and novel techniques for the ever-changing fire environment. \n  \nThemes will be addressed through a combination of lectures\, panel discussions\, informal talks\, demonstrations\, and field tours each day. \n  \nWeather permitting\, there will be a prescribed burn for attendees to participate in.  More details to follow. \n  \nTopics include: \n\n– Fire-dependent species and habitats\n– Re-introducing fire to long unburned ecosystems\n– Seasonal effects on native groundcover\n– Smoke management standards\n– Strategic burn planning\n– Burning imbedded ecosystems effectively\n– Patch burning and mosaic effects for wildlife\n– Fire and Invasive species\n– Fire surrogate treatments\n\n  \nWho should attend: Participants should have completed a form of recognized fire training prior to this course (ex. home state’s Certified Prescribed Burn Manager\, NWCG 200-level courses) \, and/or landowners who have ample burn experience. \n  \nLodging information:   \nA limited number of rooms at the Walter Lodge are available on site.  The lodge is an 8 room\, 16 bed facility that offers a shared living and dining area\, kitchen with basic appliances\, two multi-stall bathrooms\, and laundry capability. Bed linens and towels are provided. It is recommended that you bring your own toiletries. The washer and dryers are for guests’ use\, but laundry detergent is not provided.\nRates:\nSingle occupancy rooms: $60 per night\nDouble occupancy: $80 per night ($40/person)\nPlease indicate on your registration form if you’d like to stay at the lodge. \n  \nArea hotels are located in Tallahassee\, FL or Thomasville\, GA\, each approximately 30 minutes from the site. \n  \n\nPresented with support from the Georgia Sentinel Landscape Pilot Project with funding from the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the U.S. Department of Defense through the U.S. Endowment for Forests and Communities\, Inc.\, the Georgia Forestry Commission\, Tall Timbers\, and the Wade Foundation. \n  \n\nThe Longleaf Alliance cares about the communities where we work. Participants should not attend if exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19\, or other communicable diseases.
