Next Generation

Children are often more knowledgeable about tropical rainforests and other distant habitats than those in their own backyards – even for an ecosystem like longleaf pine, which is as rich in plants and animals and equally in peril.

The longleaf pine ecosystem presents an opportunity to study important biological concepts, cultural history, and modern conservation issues. Environmental education is a powerful tool we can use to grow a love for longleaf across the Southeast.

Learning with Longleaf

The Longleaf Alliance’s 119-page educational series, Learning with Longleaf, includes 21 lessons and 2 extension activities addressing key ecological concepts:

Learning with Longleaf Flyer
  • LONGLEAF PINE FORESTS – The Ecosystem
  • WHO LIVES IN THE FOREST? – Diversity & Interrelationships
  • FIRE IN THE FOREST – Ecological Disturbance
  • HUMAN INFLUENCES – Patterns of Change

Each lesson includes concise messaging for students, background information for teachers, and keyword glossary.

Patrick Elliott's illustrations accompany each topic, with black-and-white printable coloring sheets.

More educational resources from The Longleaf Alliance:

Burner Bob® - Longleaf pine's prescribed fire mascot is a Bobwhite Quail who shares his message in videos and coloring books.

Longleaf Ecosystem Print - This large-scale, ecosystem level drawing, illustrated by Patrick Elliott, depicts 100+ plants and animals and includes a black and white coded key. Available for purchase.

Tumbling Longleaf Ecosystem - an oversized Jenga®-like activity with color-coded blocks representing components of the longleaf ecosystem to interactively demonstrate the role of fire.

Looking to grow prescribed fire capacity? The Bien Looking to grow prescribed fire capacity? The Biennial Longleaf Conference offers multiple opportunities to learn about Prescribed Burn Associations and collaborative burning programs. Not to mention our Conference track record includes real-world PBA success stories like the Aiken Prescribed Fire Cooperative!"The development of the Aiken Prescribed Fire Cooperative (APFC) was fueled by the 2022 Biennial Longleaf Conference in Wilmington, North Carolina. During the poster presentation and evening social, several SoLo-ACE Longleaf Partnership members discussed the presentations they enjoyed earlier in the day; someone asked, 'So what would it take to get a PBA in the Aiken area?' In just a few minutes, several people in the room joined the conversation and enthusiastically began brainstorming. A Conference session earlier in the day shared how Prescribed Burn Associations positively impact communities and increase fire on the landscape. Many of us have wanted to do just that, but having a core group of interested people willing to plan landowner meetings and coordinate was all we needed to light the torch that has become the APFC." – Jennie Haskell, The Longleaf Alliance, and Bennett Tucker, Hitchcock Woods FoundationHope we see you at some of this year's related sessions in Williamsburg, Virginia! Just ask Jennifer Fawcett with the North Carolina State University..."Following the “Fire It Up! - Planning and Leveraging Fire Festival Events” panel at the 2022 Longleaf Conference, there was interest from festival organizers in learning more about each other's efforts. From there, a Prescribed Fire Festival Learning Group was formed and has been meeting regularly. We even hosted a collaborative "Mini Fire Festival" at the 2024 Longleaf Conference in Florida. The number of events participating in the group continues to grow and has expanded beyond the Southeast. We welcome you to join us!"Visit longleafconference.com for more information on the upcoming 16th Biennial Longleaf Conference in Williamsburg, VA (October 27th-30th)!
Join the Longleaf Conference Field Tour on October Join the Longleaf Conference Field Tour on October 29th to experience the northernmost reaches of the longleaf pine ecosystem and hear firsthand from the partners and landowners leading restoration efforts across Virginia.Departing from Williamsburg Lodge, passengers will experience a short ferry boat ride across the James River, to the heart of Virginia’s pineywoods.🌲Piney Grove Preserve – See longleaf restoration in action at this 4,000-acre preserve, home to the most northern population of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers and a thriving, fire-maintained landscape rich in wildlife.🦝Raccoon Creek Pinelands – Over 1,400 acres of longleaf pine have been planted on the 2,000-acre private property, seeing a resurgence of native plant and wildlife species (especially bobwhite quail). Visit notable projects including a longleaf underplanting demonstration and forest carbon study before enjoying lunch under the pavilion built out of sustainable-sourced old-growth longleaf pine.🌱Sussex Nursery – Go behind the scenes at Virginia’s longleaf seedling production hub and learn how local genetics are supporting the future of longleaf restoration.Register for the field tour (and other Biennial Longleaf Conference offerings) at longleafconference.com > registration (link in bio).
