Longleaf Pine and Water Research Forum

March 8, 2023

The Longleaf Alliance, U.S. Forest Service, The Jones Center at Ichauway, University of Georgia, Phinizy Center for Water Sciences, and the Southeastern Partnership for Forests and Water brought together natural resource professionals, researchers, and experts to discuss research happening across the range of longleaf pine and to work collaboratively to synthesize the state-of-the-science regarding the interactions of longleaf pine forests and water resources in the southeastern U.S., identify major uncertainties and knowledge gaps, and understand the application of tools for water resource assessment with respect to longleaf pine forests.

The first day of the Longleaf Pine & Water Research Forum was held at the Sewee Visitor and Environmental Center, which was followed the next day by a field tour of Watershed 77 on the Santee Experimental Forest.

The Santee Experimental Forest is located in the Francis Marion National Forest just a few miles north of Charleston, South Carolina. Much of the forest is being restored back into native forests and longleaf pine, including Watershed 77, a research site for documenting longleaf pine restoration, carbon sequestration, silvicultural effects on hydrology, and other aspects of the forest.
