Restoration & Management

HomeWhat is Longleaf?Restoration & ManagementHerbicides

Herbicides

In addition to prescribed fire, land managers are increasingly turning to herbicides for managing competition in forest lands. In some situations, such as elimination of invasive exotic plant species like cogongrass, selective herbicides are the only tools that will achieve successful results.

Herbicide is a powerful tool, but it is important to use the right chemical for the job. Read the label and make sure the active ingredient will not negatively impact planted longleaf and/or any desirable groundcover species that occur in the treated area.

For more in-depth information about herbicide use, please consider attending our Longleaf 201 - Herbicides & Longleaf Academy.

#WeLoveOurMembers Trivia Challenge – Longleaf Seed #WeLoveOurMembers Trivia Challenge – Longleaf Seed Search 🔍 Longleaf pine cones release their seeds in the fall. Because of their large size, they don’t travel that far – usually landing just a short distance from their parent tree. When they settle into a moderate layer of leaf litter, the seeds have a better chance of NOT becoming a snack for wildlife. Can you find the fallen longleaf seed hiding in the photo? When you spot it, drop a 🌲 in the comments (no spoilers!).Participants will be entered into our "We Love Our Members" ✨GIVEAWAY✨ We will select three random members to win prizes valued at $20 or more. #FindTheSeed #WLOM2026 #WLOMW2026 #BeOurValentine #ForTheLoveOfLongleaf #WeHeartLongleaf #LongleafLove #RestoreLongleaf #longleafalliance #longleafpineecosystem #longleaf #longleafpine #longleafpines #Pinuspalustris
