Longleaf & the Landowner is designed for historically underserved landowners and land managers interested in sustainable longleaf management.
What is an Underserved Landowner?
Four groups are defined by USDA as “Historically Underserved,” including landowners from a socially or historically disadvantaged group (racial and ethnic minorities), a beginning, limited resource, or veteran landowner. (USDA)
While this program is tailored to address the unique challenges and barriers that historically underserved landowners face before managing their land effectively, all landowners and natural resource professionals are welcome to attend!
Topics you’ll learn about:
– Cultural History of Land Ownership in the South
– Gaps & Opportunities: African American Land Loss and Sustainable Forestry
– Working with a Forestry Professional
– Getting Started with Cost-Share
– Addressing Heirs Property to Grow Generational Wealth
– Creating Your Family Forest Legacy
– Business Planning for Your Family Farm or Forest
– Alabama Forestry Commission Resources
– Burning Longleaf: The Pine that Fire Built
– Longleaf: The Tree, A Natural History
– Longleaf Site Selection & Site Preparation
– Longleaf Seedling Quality, Planting Techniques
There are multiple ways to attend:
Landowner registration – at a reduced rate of $50 for the course and a discount on lodging (breakfast and dinner included)
Landowner waivers – available to waive registration and lodging costs for landowners who would not otherwise be able to attend
Professional registration – $150 for the course; on-site lodging available at an additional cost (breakfast and dinner included)
Approved for 12.5 Cat I SAF credits
This is a 2.5 day course:
Wednesday February 26th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
Thursday February 27th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
and Friday February 28th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
LODGING available at the Blue Lake Camp and Retreat Center on Wednesday and Thursday evenings during this course. Breakfast and dinner is included for overnight guests. Please indicate any requests in your registration form (cabin-mate requests, bed type, accessibility concerns, etc.)
